Retail Panel - Fresh Trends Quiz Show

In this edition of the Fresh Trends Quiz Show, we're putting a pannel of retailers to the test, quizzing them on consumer trends revealed by the 2018 edition of The Packer's Fresh Trends. 

Learn how the trends are reflected in their operations, and walk away with insights for your own. 

We're using live polling, and comparing audience response to our panel for a lively and interactive discussion led by Produce Retailer editor Pamela Riemenschneider.

Paul Kneeland

Paul Kneeland is Executive Director of Produce, Food Service, Floral and Bakeries at Gelson’s Markets located in Southern California.

Prior to that, Paul worked with innovative Millennial-based bfresh stores in Boston; an Ahold project, where he oversaw all fresh departments as part of the startup team. Before that, he was Vice President of Produce, Floral, Seafood and Meat at Kings Food Markets in Parsippany, NJ. He also oversaw the merchandising operations in Balducci’s Food Lovers Markets, a gourmet store banner of Kings. Paul is past vice-chair of the PMA 2016-2017, and a director on the board prior to that position. He is past president of the Eastern Produce Council based New Jersey and past First Vice President of the New England Produce Council.

He serves on the Center for Growing Talent Board of Directors. An industry veteran for over 37 years, Paul began his career in Boston, where he was born and raised. He holds degrees from Northeastern University and Boston College. 

Caitlin Tierney

Caitlin Tierney is director of produce for 99 Cents Only Sores, Commerce, Calif. 

 

Over her 13-year career in the produce industry, Caitlin has amassed a unique perspective of up-and-coming trends such as e-commerce, grocery delivery, prepared foods and seed science. Her retail career started as a produce sales representative for Michigan-based Spartan Stores, where she spent several years as a buyer before joining New York-based Fresh Direct as a senior produce buyer. Prior to joining 99 Cents Only, she was the produce and floral purchasing manager for Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, and produce chain marketing manager for Bayer CropScience.

 

Mike Kamphaus

 

Mike Kamphaus is president and CEO of Peirone Produce Co., Spokane, Wash.

Peirone Produce, a wholly-owned subsidiary of URM Stores Inc., services independent retailers across Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.

Kamphaus’s career started as a produce clerk at Star Markets in Boston, trimming lettuce and repacking strawberries in high school. He worked up the ranks to produce manager and night manager before moving to Roger Williams Foods in 1988. The company was acquired by Wetterau Foods, which was then acquired by Supervalu. Kamphaus remained with Supervalu, eventually serving as vice president of operations for W. Newell Co., until joining Peirone Produce in 2014.

Dave Mitchell
